2-1-1 Debuts in Central Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY – At 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 14, 2-1-1 debuted in central Oklahoma providing an easy to remember telephone number that connects residents with important community services and volunteer opportunities. Individuals and families seeking help or volunteer options can call 2-1-1, a universally recognizable number that makes a critical connection between callers and the appropriate service organization.
Burns Hargis, Bank of Oklahoma and United Way of Central Oklahoma board chairman, placed the inaugural 2-1-1 call from the Senior Summit at the Clarion Meridian Convention Center, 737 S. Meridian. Howard H. Hendrick, Oklahoma Cabinet Secretary of Human Services, answered it at the HeartLine 2-1-1 call center.
2-1-1 is currently serving 139 million Americans in 32 states. In Florida, 2-1-1 was critical to the state’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to needs after the devastating hurricanes of 2004.
Locally, 2-1-1 will be managed by HeartLine. Trained staff and volunteers will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer calls. Information provided may range from assistance escaping domestic violence to signing up to serve Thanksgiving meals.
