Mike is a clean cut young man with a great job including mentoring others and a bright future. But, life wasn't always this good. Drugs and alcohol nearly stole the life he knew.
Mike got drunk for the first time while on a backyard camping trip with his best friend - they were only ten-years-old. At 12, he got high for the first time. His High School years took him further into addiction and college freedom exaggerated the problem.
After learning his father suffered a stroke, Mike found comfort in cocaine and heroin and began dealing to make the rent. During a drug and alcohol infused party Mike was hosting, his house was raided and he was arrested.
In an attempt to escape a felony charge Mike agreed to attend a drug and alcohol counseling program. It wasn’t long before Mike gave in to temptation and fled the program.
Bouncing from place to place and drug to drug finally took its toll. Mike reached out to his mother for help. He was placed in a rehab facility that ultimately referred him to A Chance to Change.
Mike was placed in group counseling where he received peer support. This support gave Mike the courage to become sober and face his legal issues. Mike has been sober for 17 months.
The Family Assistance Program funded by United Way of Central Oklahoma allows Mike and many more like him to receive critical counseling and peer support to overcome addiction. |
