Gary has Down Syndrome. He lives with his mother, only socializing with his family and church friends. His mother could see that Gary was depressed and unhappy with himself. He had no knowledge of money and did not like to shop. Gary felt uncomfortable going to restaurants and wasn't concerned with his personal appearance. Because he often felt frustrated and lonely, Gary developed a terrible temper.
United Way told Gary's mother about services for the disabled, including Oklahoma Foundation for the Disabled. After attending for three months, Gary became a completely different person. He observed other people's behavior on bowling and movie outings and soon modeled his own behavior after them. Gary began to socialize and make friends. His hygiene has improved and he takes pride in the way he looks. He has learned to recognize the different denominations of money and has discovered that it feels good to be friendly and helpful to others.
